Experience
Downtown Port

Port Washington is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream thanks to one of the longest stretches of accessible Lake Michigan shoreline you will find. The Interurban Bike Trail and The Marina are a fantastic place to start.  An amazing charter fishing fleet offers great opportunity for outdoor adventure. Hiking and mountain biking nestled into the hills can be a great start or finish to your day.

It is also a perfect destination for historians, wine and craft beer lovers, bird watchers, and foodies. There is something for everyone in this picturesque town!

Downtown Port is at the heart of the action.

Gather around the new fire sculpture, aptly named “The Gathering,” at the Heart of the Harbor plaza as you plan your stay and don’t forget about the sun rising over Lake Michigan if you are an early bird!

Parks

Nature Abounds

Downtown Port has a beautiful park right in our district. Rotary Park has a gazebo for all-season enjoyment, which also serves as a popular wedding venue. Find out about all of Port’s walkable parks – Coal Dock, Upper Lake Park, and Veteran’s Park – at www.portwashington.recdesk.com

History

Historical Charm

Port’s history is on display in the pre-Civil War downtown architecture, but there is much to explore for history buffs. Take a tour of the 1860 Lighthouse, the Judge Eghart House, or browse the exhibitions at the Port Washington Historical Society. You can also take a self-guided Franklin Street historical walking tour, or if you dare, take a guided Ghost Walk!

Biking

The Ideal Stop

Downtown Port is situated right on the Interurban Bike Trail. Take a break on your bike ride to grab coffee at Java Dock or Banjo’s Brews or grab a bite to eat at Daily Baking Co. Bikers can also enjoy a respite at Heart of the Harbor to sit and enjoy harbor views.

Fishing

The Perfect Catch

Port Washington has long been a fishing destination. With one of the largest fleets of charter fishing boats on Lake Michigan and a salmon season that draws fishermen from near and far, Downtown Port is your gateway to a fishing paradise.

Wisconsin’s Shipwreck Coast has recently been designated a National Marine Sanctuary, and Port Washington is one of the gateway communities. The 962-square-mile Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary will protect 36 shipwrecks with great historic, archaeological, and recreational value, and research shows there may be as many as 30 more to discover!
